Pfizer plans to seek U.S. authorization for COVID booster jab

Pfizer Inc plans to seek authorization from U.S. regulators for a booster dose of its COVID-19 vaccine within the next month, stated the company’s top scientist, driven by evidence that there is an increased risk of reinfection 6 months following vaccination and the spread of the highly transmissible Delta variant.

However, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) have jointly stated that people who have been fully vaccinated do not need a booster dose at present. Some scientists have also raised questions on the need for booster shots.

Pfizer′s chief scientific officer, Mikael Dolsten, said that their vaccine is highly active against the Delta variant; however, after 6 months, the risk of reinfection is likely as the antibodies tend to wane… (Reuters, July 9, 2021)
